Every four years, the world's attention turns to major sporting events like the Commonwealth Games. We marvel at the speed, power and precision of elite athletes, often forgetting that the performance we witness is only the visible outcome of thousands of hours spent training, adapting and recovering.
For decades, elite sport has searched relentlessly for marginal gains. Coaching has evolved. Nutrition has become personalised. Data has transformed how athletes train. Yet one of the greatest competitive advantages now lies in an area that remains largely invisible to spectators: recovery.
Recovery is no longer simply about repairing the body after exercise. It has become a performance strategy in its own right.
Today's athletes may compete multiple times in a day, travel across continents in compressed schedules and train at intensities that were unimaginable a generation ago. Their ability to perform consistently depends not only on how hard they train, but on how effectively they recover between efforts.

Recovery Has Never Had More Options
Elite performance programmes today have access to an impressive toolkit.
Sports medicine has rightly moved away from searching for a single "best" recovery intervention. Instead, consensus statements from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and a growing body of systematic reviews recognise recovery as a multi-modal, athlete-centred process. The most effective recovery strategy is one that combines the right interventions at the right time and is personalised for the individual athlete, their training load and the physiological adaptations being targeted.
Cold-water immersion remains one of the most widely adopted strategies for managing muscle soreness and accelerating perceived recovery following strenuous exercise. However, practitioners increasingly recognise that its timing is critical, particularly where muscle adaptation and long-term strength development are priorities.
Blood flow restriction (BFR) training has emerged as an important rehabilitation and performance tool, enabling meaningful muscular adaptations while using lighter loads. When an athlete steps out of an ice bath, removes a pneumatic compression boot or leaves the physiotherapy room, recovery doesn't stop.

Elite sport has embraced personalisation almost everywhere else.
Training programmes are individualised.

Performance analysis is athlete-specific.
Rehabilitation protocols are bespoke.
Even sleep strategies are customised.
Yet compression has often remained surprisingly generic.
Athletes with entirely different body shapes, muscle composition, injury histories, training loads and recovery requirements are frequently expected to wear garments built around standard sizing and broadly defined compression levels. That feels increasingly out of step with where elite performance is heading.
