Over the past decade, sports compression has undergone a quiet transformation.

Originally developed to support athletic performance and recovery, compression garments are now just as likely to be found in fashion retailers as specialist sports stores. Compression leggings, tights and sleeves have become part of the broader athleisure movement valued for their comfort, style and versatility as much as any physiological benefit.

There is nothing wrong with athleisure.

It has redefined sportswear, making technical clothing more comfortable, more accessible and more appealing to wear beyond training and competition.

But in the process, something important has been lost.

Sports compression has gradually lost its clinical identity.

Compression Was Never Just Another Garment

Compression was originally introduced into sport because of its potential to influence physiology.

The objective was not fashion.

It was function.

Whether reducing muscle oscillation during exercise, improving venous return or supporting post-exercise recovery, compression was intended to deliver a measurable physiological response.

In other words, compression was being used as a therapy.

Today, many garments marketed as sports compression are designed to satisfy a much broader set of consumer expectations.

They need to look good.

Be easy to wear all day.

Fit a wide range of body shapes.

Transition seamlessly from the gym to everyday life.

These are perfectly legitimate design objectives.

They are also very different from designing a garment to deliver a precise therapeutic compression dose.

The result is that the market has become increasingly blurred.

Compression garments are now expected to perform multiple roles simultaneously as performance wear, recovery wear, travel wear and everyday athleisure.

For athletes, this creates understandable confusion.

Can One Compression Garment Really Do Everything?

An athlete preparing for a training session has a different objective from one recovering after a marathon.

During exercise, compression may be intended to reduce muscle oscillation while allowing unrestricted muscle function.

After exercise, the physiological objective changes. Recovery may require a different compression strategy altogether.

Yet many products continue to claim they are equally effective for both.

This raises an important question.

Is the same compression dose appropriate for every purpose?

In most areas of medicine, we would never expect one therapeutic dose to be optimal for completely different clinical objectives.

Why should sport be any different?

The sports compression industry has spent years discussing fabrics, moisture management, seamless construction and style.

Far less attention has been given to the one factor that arguably matters most.

Compression dose.

Compression is not simply about wearing a tighter garment.

It is about applying an appropriate level of pressure to achieve a desired physiological outcome.

Different athletes have different anatomies.

Different sports create different demands.

Different stages of training require different recovery strategies.

Yet most sports compression products continue to rely on standard sizing and fixed compression levels.

The conversation has become centred on garments rather than therapy.
